What is it?

A broad cloud of glowing gas in Cygnus. Its name comes from an outline that resembles North America on a map.

What can you see?

The red cloud fills much of the frame. Trace its boundary towards the darker notch and the narrower, brighter region below. Gas and obscuring dust together create the apparent coastline.

Why does the camera see so much red?

Energised hydrogen emits red light. Long integration and processing make that faint signal visible on a screen. This is not the same view an eye would see through a small telescope.

Behind the photo · optional experiment

Make a cloud disappear behind dust

Put a dusty screen in front of glowing gas, then add more dust. Darkness can be foreground material, rather than an empty patch of sky.

This experiment changes the physics or the viewpoint. Your photograph stays as the reference observation.
